Living it Large in Holland

February 13th, 2012 by admin No comments »

Weekend gone was nice. Had a trip across the border to Holland and stayed at the Het Arresthuis in Roermond, NL.

Really funky hotel, This place used to be a prison up until the 1990′s at which time it got converted into one of the most stylish places to stay in Holland

Made a nice change to be living it up 5* Stylie, compared to where I’ve been staying the past few months. We went around the city during the day, a bite to eat at the Hotel before going out for a few drinks.

Drive to Germany

Well was back in the UK at the weekend, quite a brief visit. Flew from Dusseldorf to Germany and picked my car out of storage in Birmingham

I then drove over to where im based in Germany

By no means the furthest drive ive done, was about 450 miles 1 way in total. I filed up in Birmingham with a full tank. Drove down to Dover – ferry across to Dunkirk, France and through France – Belgium (where i filled up on the E40) - Holland before hitting Germany  so including the Ferry think it cost me about £130 – more expensive than the £90 flight it cost me but with driving there’s no messing about getting to and from the Airports. Im not going to lie, the drive in the Type R was freaking awesome. Especially the last stretch of the Autobahn where there is no speed limit at all …. I know i didnt sell it for a reason, she still puts a smile on my face

.. Well now i have the car with me i have a bit more freedom at the weekends so going to go into some neighbouring countries, perhaps a visit to Nuremberg  Ring some time in March and a Euro trip with my first set of leave in April

Life in Germany

January 23rd, 2012 by admin No comments »

….. So with RTMC Chilwell passed its off to Germany

I have been here in Germany for near on 2 weeks now, undergoing Pre Deployment training. Completely different to what i am used to in Civvy Life. One thing I’m loving is the chances I’m getting to train.

Last week i managed to hit the gym every day, as well as doing a Biometric circuit session, Basketball, a 6 mile boot run and a 4 mile run in kit carrying 20KG  -  let Op Massive begin!!

Also having the weekend free I’m trying to get out and about to see what Germany & Central Europe has to offer.
Friday night was a bit of a messy one ended up in Mönchengladbach, Düsseldorf  so not  a great deal happened on the Saturday since we didn’t get in till like 6am

One advantage of being so close to the border is that its quite easy to get over to Holland. Sunday we went to Roermond.

The Accommodation here is a lot better than what we had at Chilwell. Dont get me wrong, its by no means a 5* place with en-suite & a minibar – were at least in single man rooms now so there is a bit more privacy :D

One thing I’m a bit gutted about is that last time i was here in September 2011 Oktober fest was on. I really wanted to hit that but training didn’t permit it due to the 2hr drive… I won’t be able to make this year so looks like 2012, I’m going to make sure I’m there!! – Another place i want to hit while I’m here is Nuremberg Ring…. So watch this space!!

And Welcome to Chilwell!

Yea Thanks Chilli

Well, im going to keep this one a bit short and sweet. Its been about 3 weeks since ive put my civilian career on hold and signed up for a tour with the Army.

Between Christmas and New Years was a bit manic for me. Had to finish up in the office, move all my stuff from the apartment and pack to go away.

Been @ RTMC Chilwell for about a week and a half now. Going from living in the city centre of Brum, doing what i wanted to when i pleased, To full time service with Army and sharing a 40 man room has been a bit of an adjustment – makes me think that this must be what prison is like. Grown men sleeping on Bunkbeds just aint right ;)

So Chilwell is the place you go through as a TA soldier when you are being mobilized for operational deployment and brought into full time service

In addition to the normal military tests we do. we also get issued our kit for theater. Now what you get issued is dependant on what category you are. Now myself being a Cat 2 means that i should be going out onto the ground every now and then in Afghan, so therefore im issued a bit more. Gotta say im really impressed with the stuff we get issued, without going into specifics  the body armour and IP kit has come a long way since 2001 and it makes me thankful compared to what the boys were deploying with say 5 years or so ago

Been told that i cant have any leave this weekend as we finish Chilwell on Fri and are off to Germany on the Sat with an overnight stay in Redditch which were gated for :( – hopefully once we get back to Germany we will be in single man rooms

Scaling down, getting ready for the move & selling my stuff

December 22nd, 2011 by admin No comments »

Welll  –  with the year drawing to a close and the fact i have been mobilised with the first stint being in Germany in early 2012. This month has generally been a month of scalling down. Now prehaps im too materialistic  – i know this,   so i have been Selling my Stuff to make sure that im doing it right and not too attached to anything

One of the things i got rid of was my PC  -  so now moved everting over to a combination of a NAS device i have chillin on the LAN and my Apple Mac    -  still a bit reluctant to move to OSX completely   so using VM Fusion to emulate a windows box on my Mac

Quite a good peice of Sotware, means you can toggle between the 2 OS’s without having to reboot or use Boot Camp. Installing a Virtual Windows Machine was the easy bit -  however porting my iTunes colleaction accross was the difficult part. Finally think i have managed to do this successfully. Everything is now on a portable HDD and also held on my NAS for redundancy. The next step is for me to automatically sync my portable drive with my Mac

The 50′ TV has also gone and a bunch of stuff that ive never really used. I am adamant im keeping my car tho, its my baby and cant see me getting another car soon that gives me so much enjoyment
